Orienteering sprint instructions - Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
Physical Education Resource Description
Orienteering is an engaging outdoor activity that can be enjoyed by a large number of participants, regardless of the weather conditions. It's designed to accommodate eight teams, each consisting of up to six members. The event can be adjusted for larger groups by having teams go through the course multiple times. In this sport, all teams cover the same total distance, but the distance each team member runs varies, introducing an element of luck into the competition.
The rules of orienteering are straightforward. Teams are assigned letters from 'A' to 'H', and the first runner of each team is given the location of their initial checkpoint, which is noted on their competitor's card. The race begins with all first runners heading to their designated checkpoints. Upon arrival, they find their next checkpoint reference, which corresponds to their team letter, and record this on their card. This information is then verified by the controller at the base. If correct, the next team member continues the sequence with the competitor's card and pencil in hand. The event is timed, and a team's completion is marked by the visitation of all 12 bases in the correct order, culminating in the revelation of a code word, such as "DOG". As the competition progresses, exciting chases are likely to unfold, adding to the dynamic nature of the orienteering sprint.
