Long-term overview - North America - Year 6

The National curriculum for Key Stage 2 Geography sets out clear objectives for Year 6 students to develop a comprehensive understanding of North America's geography. Students are expected to be able to identify countries using maps, with a focus on Europe (including Russia), North America, and South America. They should concentrate on environmental regions, key physical and human characteristics, countries, and major cities. The curriculum also encourages comparisons of geographical similarities and differences through studies of the UK, a European region, and a region within North America.

Substantive knowledge includes being able to name and locate North American countries, understanding the differences between living in the UK and North America, recognizing the importance of industry globally, and acknowledging the diversity of children's lives worldwide. Students will use tools like Google Earth to explore countries and trace natural features such as rivers. Disciplinary knowledge involves appreciating historical changes in country names and boundaries, understanding why people settle in challenging environments, reflecting on changes in architecture, trade, and population, and creating journey booklets to document their findings. They will also examine how the USA's natural resources have contributed to its wealth and power, considering the impact of immigration on the nation's development.
