Humans - Knowledge Organisers
Science Resource Description
In Year 1 at Wells Hall Primary School, students embark on a scientific exploration of the human body within the biology strand of their science curriculum. Prior knowledge required for this unit includes an understanding of the importance of exercise and healthy eating, as well as familiarity with rhymes that mention body parts, such as "Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes." During the course of the unit titled 'Animals including humans (humans)', students will engage in interactive activities to deepen their understanding of human anatomy and the senses.
Investigative tasks are designed to help students identify and label different body parts and articulate their functions. For instance, they might trace a classmate's outline with chalk and then annotate the drawing with the names of body parts. They'll also perform simple exercises to observe which parts of the body are involved in movement. Sensory experiences form a significant part of the learning process, where students will use their senses to explore various foods and other materials, taking care to note any allergies. By the end of the unit, students will be able to name the different parts of the body and describe the five senses—smell, taste, touch, sight, and hearing—along with the corresponding organs like the nose, tongue, skin, eyes, and ears. The curriculum also includes a before-and-after assessment through questions that gauge the students' ability to match body parts with their functions and senses, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the topic.
