Animals including Humans - Risk Assessment
Science Resource Description
The Primary Science Advisory Service (PZAZ) has issued guidance for Year 1 teachers on conducting risk assessments for the 'Animals including Humans' topic. Teachers are advised to consult health and safety information from either the CLEAPSS or SSERC websites for practical activities involving children and the handling of potentially hazardous substances. PZAZ disclaims liability for actions taken based on their resources, including lesson plans, CPD videos, and risk assessments, and stresses that their guidance has been prepared with due diligence based on current knowledge.
The risk assessment identifies a low risk profile for the lessons, with potential hazards including skin irritation from plant matter, allergic reactions from outdoor allergens and certain foods, cuts from scissors, and eye damage from elastic bands. Controls are suggested to mitigate these risks, such as awareness of the outdoor environment, handwashing after outdoor activities, adherence to school policies, supervised use of scissors, wearing safety goggles with elastic bands, and precautions for pupils with food allergies or respiratory conditions. The assessment also requires teachers to check whether there is a need to list any chemicals, biological matter, or mains appliances used in the lessons, along with appropriate disposal methods.
