Gymnastics 2 - Lesson 6
Physical Education Resource Description
In the sixth lesson of Gymnastics 2 for Year 5, pupils are tasked with the learning objective of safely performing a jumping roll within a routine. The success of this lesson is measured by several criteria, including the pupil's ability to confidently take weight on their hands, push off of their toes leading with their hands, tuck their head in to roll safely while in flight, and smoothly transition between a roll and a jump as part of a routine. Key vocabulary for this lesson includes terms such as 'entrance', 'exit', 'forward roll', 'flight', 'crashmat', 'weight on hands', 'bound', 'spring', and 'tuck'. To facilitate the lesson, equipment such as cones, gymnastic mats, and benches are utilised.
The lesson begins with a 10-minute warm-up featuring a Cat Spring Relay, where pupils line up in teams and practice the cat spring technique to enhance their gymnastic performance. This warm-up focuses on developing upper body and core strength, as well as coordination. Following the warm-up, the main 30-minute session involves pupils working in pairs to practice Cat Springs and Forward Rolls on their mats, with the teacher providing key teaching points and modelling a jump with a transition into a forward roll. The pupils then perform routines in pairs, combining movements such as entrance, jump into roll, headstand, and balance into one smooth sequence. To conclude the lesson, a 10-minute cool down with Bench Bunny Hops Relay allows pupils to reflect on their performance and consider areas for improvement, while also engaging in a physical activity to bring their heart rates down gently.
