Gymnastics 2 - Lesson 2
Physical Education Resource Description
In the second lesson of the Year 5 Gymnastics 2 series, students aim to consolidate their understanding and execution of headstands, performing them safely with or without support. The success criteria for this lesson are clearly set out: pupils should be able to confidently take weight on three points of contact, use partner support effectively, and gradually progress into balancing by walking their feet into their chest. The key vocabulary for this lesson includes terms such as 'entrance', 'exit', 'headstand', 'balance', 'points of contact', 'extend', 'tuck', and 'partner support'. To facilitate the activities, equipment such as cones, gymnastic mats, and 4-8 bibs are required.
The lesson begins with a warm-up game called 'Spiders & Scorpions', which involves taggers (scorpions) trying to tag other students (spiders), who then switch roles upon being tagged. This game engages students in evasive movements and prepares them for the main activity. The core of the lesson focuses on performing headstands in pairs, with the teacher recapping the steps and demonstrating the correct positioning and balance. Students discuss safety and support techniques with their partners before attempting the headstand with a partner's assistance. The lesson progresses with students creating a performance sequence, including a headstand, and concludes with a cool-down session aimed at developing core strength. The cool-down also provides an opportunity for reflection on the skills learned and the performances given during the lesson.
