Gymnastics 2 - Lesson 5
Physical Education Resource Description
In Year 5 Gymnastics 2, Lesson 5, the key learning objective is to develop the headstand and incorporate it into a gymnastic routine. Pupils are expected to confidently take weight on three points of contact and maintain balance with or without support. They are also encouraged to use selected criteria in their performance. The lesson introduces key vocabulary such as 'entrance', 'exit', 'headstand', 'balance', 'points of contact', 'extend', 'tuck', 'partner support', 'forward roll', 'rounded back', 'aligned body', 'fluidity', 'transition', 'control', 'sequence', and 'routine'. To ensure safety and effectiveness, gymnastic mats are used as part of the equipment and resources.
The lesson is structured into three parts, starting with a 10-minute warm-up where pupils practice different types of movement such as walking, jogging, hopping, skipping, and running, while listening for stop signals and scanning for space. The main 30-minute session focuses on pupils working in pairs to recap and perform a headstand. They follow a step-by-step approach, from tucking into a low shape on the mat to extending legs with pointed toes to achieve the headstand. Pupils then form groups of four to create a routine that includes headstands, strong entrances and exits, rolling, forward rolls, and linked movements, all within a 45-60 second performance. The lesson concludes with a 10-minute cool down, featuring core strength exercises like sit-ups and leg raisers, followed by a reflection on what was learned and how to improve further.
