Gymnastics 2 - Lesson 3
Physical Education Resource Description
In the third lesson of the Year 5 Gymnastics 2 series, pupils are introduced to the challenging transition from a headstand into a forward roll. The lesson's learning objectives are to instil confidence in pupils as they take weight on three points of contact, ensure they can correctly tuck in their head with chin to chest while keeping their back, bottom, and legs aligned, and enable them to perform both backward and forward rolls. Key vocabulary terms such as 'entrance', 'exit', 'headstand', 'balance', and 'transition' are emphasised to help pupils understand and communicate the movements they are learning. To facilitate the activities, equipment such as cones, gymnastic mats, bibs, and beanbags are utilised.
The lesson begins with a dynamic warm-up game of Front Support Tag, where pupils practice holding the front support position and evading taggers. This is followed by a detailed exploration of the headstand, with the teacher modelling the correct form and pupils working in pairs to practice and support each other. Pupils are encouraged to discuss safety and the importance of body alignment. As the lesson progresses, they move from performing supported headstands to incorporating a forward roll, focusing on maintaining a rounded back and controlled movement. The session concludes with a cool-down involving different gymnastic positions and shapes, and a moment of reflection for the pupils to consider their achievements and areas for improvement.
