Five a Day - FDP - Decimals
Maths Resource Description
KS2Gems has developed a set of 'Maths Five a Day' exercises, offering five SATs style questions that target key mathematical skills involving decimals. These exercises are designed to help Year 6 students sharpen their understanding and proficiency in working with decimals through a variety of tasks. The first activity, 'Rounding decimals', challenges students to identify which numbers round to a given decimal, such as 25.8. This helps students practice the important skill of rounding decimals to the nearest tenth.
The subsequent tasks involve comparing and ordering decimals, as well as multiplying and dividing them. For example, students might be asked to arrange a set of decimal numbers in ascending or descending order, testing their ability to recognise the value of digits in different decimal places. Another exercise uses a given multiplication fact, such as 15,600 equals 624 multiplied by 25, to solve related problems involving scaling the numbers up or down. These activities not only reinforce students' arithmetic skills but also their understanding of place value and number sense with decimals. Teachers are provided with answers to facilitate quick assessment and can use these questions as a warm-up activity to gauge students' knowledge or as a tool for retrieval practice to reinforce learning.
