Progression pedagogy - Energy - Year
Geography Resource Description
In an educational unit centred around energy, the progression pedagogy follows a structured approach to help pupils understand how we energise our homes and country. This approach is designed to maximise opportunities for students to not only acquire knowledge but also to retain it effectively. The framework utilised throughout the unit is the 'link it, learn it, check it, show it, and know it' system, which is broken down into distinct stages to facilitate the learning and remembering process.
Before the learning begins, the 'link it' stage encourages pupils to make connections with prior knowledge or experiences, setting the stage for new information to be integrated more meaningfully. During the learning phase, 'learn it' focuses on introducing new concepts and information, while 'check it' allows both educators and pupils to assess understanding through various methods of evaluation. The 'show it' phase provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their learning, reinforcing their knowledge. Finally, the 'know it' stage, which occurs at the end of the learning, ensures that pupils have a firm grasp of the key concepts and can recall the information when needed. This systematic approach is detailed in the 'Five stages of learning and remembering' document available on the Focus Learning Challenge website, offering further insight into the teaching methodology.
