Progression pedagogy - Plants - Year 2
Science Resource Description
In the Year 2 unit focusing on plants, students explore the essential requirements for plants and trees to grow healthily. This unit is structured to enhance pupils' knowledge retention and understanding through a systematic approach known as 'link it, learn it, check it, show it, and know it'. This pedagogical framework is designed to help students make connections with prior learning, actively engage with new information, and then consolidate their knowledge through various stages of the learning process.
At the beginning of the unit, 'before the learning', students revisit concepts they have previously encountered to establish a foundation for the new topic. 'During the learning', the students are introduced to the specific needs of plants and trees, such as sunlight, water, nutrients, and air. As they progress, 'at the end of the learning', students have the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding through activities that 'show it', ensuring they can apply what they've learned. Finally, 'after the learning', the 'know it' stage is designed to reinforce and embed the knowledge, making it stick for future recall and application. The 'Five stages of learning and remembering' framework provided by Focus Education (UK) Ltd supports this structured approach, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.
