National Curriculum Objectives - Plants - Year 1
Science Resource Description
In the Year 1 science curriculum, pupils are encouraged to explore the world of botany by learning about various common wild and garden plants. The national curriculum sets out clear objectives for students to identify and name these plants, fostering an appreciation and understanding of the natural environment that surrounds them. Additionally, pupils are taught to recognise and describe the fundamental components of common flowering plants. This includes being able to name the different parts such as petals, stem, leaves, and roots, which are critical to the plant's survival and function.
Alongside their botanical studies, Year 1 pupils also turn their attention to the skies and trees within their school grounds to identify and name common birds that share their environment. This aspect of the curriculum aims to heighten pupils' awareness of biodiversity and the importance of habitats in supporting various species. Through these learning objectives, children begin to build a substantive knowledge base that includes not only the names of plants and birds but also an understanding of plant anatomy. This foundational knowledge is a stepping stone to further scientific inquiry and learning throughout their education.
