Gymnastics 2 - Unit Overview
Physical Education Resource Description
The Gymnastics 2 unit for Year 2 pupils centres on enhancing their skills in using gymnastic apparatus, mastering various shapes, and perfecting rolling techniques. The unit's summary outlines the key components, which include learning how to safely enter and exit the apparatus, sustaining balances, and performing shapes both on the apparatus and in mid-air. Additionally, pupils will practise and integrate different rolling methods such as the egg roll, teddy bear roll, and sideways shoulder roll into their gymnastic routines. This unit builds upon the foundational skills acquired in the first gymnastics unit, aiming to advance the pupils' abilities and confidence in gymnastics.
Within the unit, there are a series of lessons, each with specific learning objectives and success criteria. For example, the first lesson focuses on the safe use of apparatus with entrances, exits, and balances, where pupils are expected to demonstrate soft landings and precise balances. As the unit progresses, lessons cover rehearsing low to high-level shapes, executing shapes in flight, and practising rolling and strengthening balances. Each lesson is designed to last approximately one hour, accounting for changing times and equipment setup. Teaching tips emphasise the importance of safety, creative expression, and the structural flow of performances, from entrance to exit. Pupils are encouraged to perform to their peers, fostering a collaborative and supportive learning environment.
