Gymnastics 2 - Lesson 4
Physical Education Resource Description
In the fourth lesson of Year 2 Gymnastics, the students are set to learn and perform various shapes in flight using gymnastics apparatus. The learning objectives are clear: pupils should be able to execute learned shapes while 'in flight', jump and land safely with control, and perform shapes at low, medium, and high levels both on and off the apparatus. Key vocabulary for the lesson includes terms such as 'entrance', 'exit', 'balance', 'apparatus', 'jumping', 'landing', 'pike', 'tuck', 'dish', 'arch', and 'straddle'. The lesson is well-equipped with safety mats, a range of apparatus like benches and boxes of varying heights, a springboard, a crash mat, and cones to denote safe zones.
The warm-up consists of setting up multiple apparatus areas and having pupils practice shapes in flight, focusing on safe landing techniques. The main session builds upon this, with the class teacher modelling how to perform shapes on the apparatus, and pupils are given time to practice transitions between apparatus. They also explore creative variations, such as jumping and balancing from benches and hoops, hopping and galloping on floor spots, and climbing wall ropes. The lesson progresses to more complex shapes in flight from the apparatus, with a focus on safe landings and creative balances. The cool-down activity encourages teamwork through 'Follow the Leader', with pupils rehearsing different movement styles. Finally, pupils reflect on their performance and discuss improvements for the future, using the key vocabulary to describe their own and their partners' performances.
