Games 1 - Unit Overview
Physical Education Resource Description
The 'Games 1' unit for Year 2 is an integral part of the Striver Lesson Plans, designed to enhance pupils' physical abilities through engaging and structured activities. Throughout this unit, pupils will focus on developing control and balance during basic movements, such as side-stepping and dodging to avoid others. They will also work on ball handling skills, learning to control a moving ball and mastering rolling and gathering techniques. The unit builds upon prior learning, including fundamental movement skills like agility, balance, and coordination, as well as basic ball skills such as rolling, bouncing, and catching.
Teachers are provided with a Medium Term Plan that outlines specific learning objectives and success criteria for each lesson. For instance, the first lesson aims to improve spatial awareness and floor movement patterns, while subsequent lessons progress to ball control, rolling towards targets, and efficient ball collection. By the end of the unit, pupils are expected to show improved throwing and catching abilities, both with two hands and one hand, and apply these skills in small-sided games. Teaching tips suggest allowing for lesson timings that include set-up and pack-up of equipment and recommend adapting activities to suit the pupils' abilities, with the option to introduce challenges for those who excel.
