Games 1 - Lesson 3
Physical Education Resource Description
The third lesson in the Games 1 series for Year 2 Athletics is designed to teach pupils how to control a moving ball in various ways. The learning objectives set out for this lesson are for students to be able to describe and demonstrate different methods of moving a ball, including dribbling, bouncing, and balancing. The success criteria for the lesson indicate that pupils should be able to articulate a number of ways to move a ball and show proficiency in dribbling, bouncing, and balancing the ball. Key vocabulary terms such as 'control', 'dribbling', 'balancing', and 'bouncing' are introduced and reinforced throughout the lesson. To facilitate the activities, a range of equipment and resources are required, including cones, tennis balls, a football, a tennis racket, a basketball, and a hockey stick.
The lesson begins with a 10-minute warm-up activity called 'Gateways', where pupils navigate through gates formed by cones, initially without and then with a tennis ball. This exercise emphasises the importance of keeping heads up and looking for space. The main part of the lesson, lasting 30 minutes, involves pupils rotating through four activities, each focussing on a different skill: dribbling a football, balancing a tennis ball on a racket, continuously bouncing a basketball, and dribbling a ball with a hockey stick. The lesson concludes with a 'Control The Treasure' game, where pupils work in groups to collect tennis balls from the centre of the area and bring them back using the specified method of control. The lesson wraps up with a 10-minute cool down consisting of static balances, including one-leg balances and ankle extensions, with variations and discussions to reflect on the purpose of the lesson and areas for improvement.
