Spelling - Home learning - Sound aw
English Resource Description
Home learning activities are centred around the 'aw' sound, providing children with differentiated spelling lists to enhance their understanding and retention of words containing this sound. The lists include a variety of words such as 'yawn', 'drawn', 'dawn', 'prawn', 'raw', 'crawl', 'claw', 'shawl', 'draw', and 'scrawl', with the challenge word being 'squawked'. Blank boxes are available for adding any additional words that may be relevant for the children to learn.
The 'Look, Say, Cover, Write and Check' method is employed to assist children in mastering the spelling of these words. It encourages them to look at the word, say it aloud, cover it, attempt to write it from memory, and then check to see if they have spelled it correctly, with space provided for corrections. Additionally, 'Read and Match' activities enable children to engage with the words in a different format, and they are encouraged to write sentences using their chosen words to demonstrate comprehension. For a fun twist, the 'Real and Nonsense words' exercise allows children to distinguish between real words containing the 'aw' sound and made-up words, further reinforcing their phonetic skills and understanding of word structures.
