Speak like an expert - Light - Year 6

In an interactive classroom activity designed for Year 6 pupils, "Speak like an Expert" encourages students to delve into the fascinating world of light and vision. The activity is structured to enhance both public speaking skills and scientific knowledge. Pupils begin by selecting a topic related to light from a provided matrix, which includes intriguing subjects such as shadows, the retina, concave and convex mirrors, the speed of light, light waves, and the workings of the human eye.

Once a topic is chosen, each pupil is given a two-minute window to confidently present their knowledge on the subject, effectively becoming an 'expert' in that brief period. To add an element of challenge and reward, their listening partner is responsible for scoring the presentation out of 10. The score is then multiplied by a factor determined by the column in which their topic is listed—either by 2 or 4 points. This multiplication element not only incentivises pupils to choose their topics wisely but also integrates a quick mathematical exercise into the activity. The aim is to foster a deeper understanding of light and its properties, as well as how our eyes use it to perceive the world around us.
