Plants - Risk Assessment

In the context of Year 1 science lessons on plants, the Primary Science Advisory Service (PZAZ) provides a risk assessment framework to ensure the health and safety of pupils, teachers, assistants, and classroom visitors. It is advised that teachers consult the CLEAPSS or SSERC websites for detailed health and safety information regarding practical activities involving children and the management of hazardous substances. PZAZ clarifies that it is not responsible for the actions of individuals who utilise its resources, such as lesson plans, CPD videos, risk assessments, or other materials, and it does not accept liability for injuries or damages that may arise from their use.

The risk assessment identifies potential hazards associated with handling plant matter, such as allergic reactions, skin irritations from stinging or thorny plants, and slip hazards from spilled liquids. The risk profile for these lessons is rated as low. To control these risks, PZAZ recommends measures including attention to known allergies, thorough hand washing after contact with plants, cautionary guidance around certain plants like nettles, holly, and brambles, and prompt clean-up of any spillages. Pupils are expected to handle a variety of plant matter, but no specific chemicals or mains appliances are indicated for use. Disposal of waste should be managed through regular bins or water streams, as appropriate.
