Plants - Lesson Plan
Science Resource Description
By the end of the unit on plants, students will have a well-rounded understanding of various plant types and their characteristics. They will learn the names of common garden plants, such as roses, poppies, and sunflowers, and understand that people cultivate these plants for their aesthetic value or for producing food, such as in herb gardens or vegetable patches. The unit also covers common wild plants like dandelions, daisies, and nettles, which grow independently without human care and are sometimes considered weeds if found in undesired locations. Additionally, the children will distinguish between deciduous trees, which lose their leaves annually, and evergreen trees that maintain their foliage throughout the year.
Students will delve into the anatomy of plants, identifying parts such as leaves, stems, roots, and flowers. They will also be introduced to a rich vocabulary related to botany, including terms like 'bulb', 'flowering', 'fruit', and 'vegetation'. Practical activities are integrated into the learning experience, where children will plant seeds, observe their growth, and embark on a wild plant hunt to apply their knowledge. They will engage with their local environment by identifying trees in a country park and sorting leaves into categories of deciduous and evergreen. By the end of the unit, students will be able to confidently match terms with their correct descriptions, label plant parts, understand the process of planting, and know the best practices for plant care.
