The Human Body and Taste - Teacher Explanation
Science Resource Description
Welcome to Lesson 1.11 of the Year 1 unit on animals, including humans, titled 'The Human Body and Taste'. This lesson is designed to meet the National Curriculum objectives for pupils to identify, name, draw, and label the basic parts of the human body and understand which body parts correspond to each of the five senses. The lesson involves practical activities, so it's essential to ensure pupils handle scissors with care and avoid flicking elastic rubber bands at each other. Hygiene is a key point, as pupils will need to wash their hands thoroughly throughout the lesson, especially after handling different materials. Additionally, it is crucial to be mindful of any pupils with food allergies when planning the lesson's activities.
The lesson will guide students through drawing and labelling the human body, identifying parts associated with the senses, and conducting experiments on the sense of taste. Pupils will work in pairs to count taste buds using food colouring, a torch, and other materials while maintaining hygiene. They will also explore the role of smell in taste perception by tasting food samples while blindfolded and with their noses pegged. This experiment aims to determine if the absence of smell affects the ability to identify flavours. Furthermore, pupils will investigate whether sight influences taste by tasting coloured vanilla yoghurt and guessing the flavours. The lesson provides an engaging and educational experience that includes cross-curricular links to history, art, design and technology, and maths, offering a holistic approach to learning about the human body and the sense of taste.
