Basketball - Lesson 6
Physical Education Resource Description
The sixth lesson in the Year 6 basketball series focuses on applying previously learned skills to a full-sized game. The objective is for pupils to effectively transfer their dribbling, passing, shooting, and defending abilities into an authentic game situation. To facilitate this, the class is equipped with a set of basketballs, cones, and basketball hoops. The lesson begins with a warm-up where the class is divided into thirds: passers, attackers, and defenders. The attackers earn points by successfully catching and passing the ball back to the passers while evading the defenders. This activity not only heats up their muscles but also sharpens their agility and coordination.
During the main 30-minute session, the class is split into mixed-ability teams of five. They participate in a mini-tournament designed to allow pupils to showcase all the skills they have honed throughout the lessons. To promote teamwork and passing, certain rules might be introduced, such as requiring a minimum number of passes before attempting to score or ensuring every team member has touched the ball. The lesson concludes with a cool-down period consisting of gentle stretches, including arm circles, side stretches, quadriceps, calf, groin, and hamstring stretches. These exercises are crucial for preventing injuries and aiding muscle recovery after the high-energy gameplay.
