Basketball - Lesson 5
Physical Education Resource Description
The fifth lesson in the Year 6 basketball series is designed to help students apply their previously learned basketball skills in a game setting. The lesson's learning objectives are centred around the core competencies of dribbling, passing, shooting, and defending. To achieve these objectives, the lesson plan is structured with clear success criteria that include the ability to dribble with control, pass the ball accurately to teammates, shoot with precision, and effectively defend against opponents. This lesson continues to build on the key vocabulary introduced in earlier sessions, ensuring that students are familiar with the terminology associated with the sport. The necessary equipment for this lesson includes a class set of basketballs, cones, and basketball hoops.
The lesson commences with a warm-up activity that involves half of the class dribbling basketballs inside the court while the other half stands outside. This exercise focuses on chest and bounce passing, as well as pivoting—a key maneuver where one foot remains planted while the other moves around. During the main part of the lesson, students engage in small-sided games with an emphasis on offensive skills such as dribbling, passing, and shooting, followed by a defensive focus where team sizes are adjusted to challenge and develop the students' abilities. The lesson concludes with a cool-down activity where students race to collect basketballs thrown by the teacher, encouraging quick retrieval and teamwork. Throughout the lesson, pupil talk is encouraged to reflect on their strengths and areas for improvement, whether in attacking or defending, and to identify which skills require further practice.
