Basketball - Lesson 3
Physical Education Resource Description
In the third lesson of a Year 6 basketball series, students aim to master the skill of dribbling followed by shooting with correct technique. The lesson commences with a dynamic warm-up where pupils avoid being tagged while running across the basketball court, with tagged individuals only rejoining the game after another player crawls under their outstretched legs. The main activity focuses on the key teaching points of shooting: maintaining shoulder-width stance, using both hands to hold the ball with only the shooting hand pushing the ball towards the basket, and releasing the ball with a snap of the wrist. Pupils practice shooting after dribbling around cone obstacles, with an emphasis on maintaining proper form throughout.
The lesson advances with a game of 'Knockout', where students line up and shoot in quick succession, aiming to score before the person behind them does. This game tests their ability to keep up their shooting technique under pressure. To conclude the session, a cool-down period involves a gentle jog and stretches targeting various muscle groups such as the arms, sides, quadriceps, calves, groin, and hamstrings. Pupils reflect on the challenges faced during the lesson, particularly the difficulty of shooting accurately at the end of a dribble and under the pressure of the game, identifying areas for improvement in their shooting technique for future practice.
