Cricket - Lesson 5
Physical Education Resource Description
In the fifth lesson of a Year 3 cricket module, students are taught to master different batting shots, with a focus on developing their defensive and drive shots. The learning objectives set out for the pupils include playing a defensive shot, executing a drive, and applying these skills within a game context. The success of the lesson is gauged by the students' ability to perform these shots and adapt them to match situations. To facilitate the lesson, essential equipment such as bats, balls, markers, and lines are required, along with a grasp of key terms like 'defensive', 'drive', and 'shot'.
The session begins with a warm-up activity called 'Turnabout Catching', where students form trios and practice catching and throwing in rotation. The main part of the lesson is divided into focused exercises: the 'Forward Defensive' and 'Straight Drive'. Students work in groups of four, rotating roles between bowler, batter, wicketkeeper, and fielder. The forward defensive practice involves the batter stopping four underarm bowls within a 2-meter zone from the batting crease. The straight drive exercise follows a similar setup but emphasizes a straight bat push towards the wicket. To conclude, 'Quick Runs' is a dynamic activity where batters aim to score runs based on where the ball bounces in relation to a central line, all while maintaining safety and encouraging peer discussion on technique. The cool down consists of jogging integrated with lunges and stretches to ensure a comprehensive wrap-up to the physical activities.
