Cricket - Lesson 4
Physical Education Resource Description
In the fourth lesson of a Year 3 cricket series, students are set to master the skill of overarm bowling with correct technique. The learning objectives are clear: pupils should be able to bowl a ball overarm, hold the ball correctly, and apply their skills within a simple game context. The success of the lesson is measured by the ability of the pupils to meet these criteria. Key vocabulary terms such as 'bowl', 'stance', 'overarm', and 'wickets' are introduced to enhance their understanding of the sport. The lesson is well-equipped with essential cricket gear including balls, cones or targets, wickets, bats, and markers to facilitate the learning process.
The lesson begins with a 10-minute warm-up where pupils engage in a triangle bowling exercise, encouraging them to bowl underarm and follow their pass in groups of four. Moving on to the main 30-minute session, the class is divided into small groups to practice overarm bowling, with pupils coaching each other through the action. They participate in target bowling practice, aiming to score points by hitting a hoop or the wickets. An interactive 'Change Ends' activity follows, where fielding and batting teams work in tandem to score runs and hit the wickets, without actually batting the ball. The lesson concludes with a 10-minute cool down involving jogging, skipping, walking, and various arm and body stretches to relax the muscles after the session's activities.
