Dance 2 - Unit Overview
Physical Education Resource Description
The 'Dance 2' unit for Year 2 pupils is designed as an engaging overview that culminates in a class performance themed around a Toymaker's Workshop. Throughout the unit, children will have the opportunity to explore and select a diverse array of movements inspired by different types of toys. The objective is for students to build on their previous dance experience, understanding the concept of a dance phrase, and how to link various movements to create a cohesive group performance. They will also develop the ability to communicate their thoughts and opinions on both their own and others' creative dance processes.
Each lesson within the unit has specific learning objectives and success criteria, ranging from exploring movements associated with toy making tools, robots, toy soldiers, marionettes, and toy transport. The unit aims to foster body awareness, creativity, choreographic and performance skills, as well as an appreciation for dance. Teachers are provided with tips on lesson timings, safety measures such as the use of gymnastics mats, and the importance of creating a safe and nurturing environment for discussion and feedback. The success criteria across the lessons include the ability to coordinate movements, respond to music, and give feedback using simple dance vocabulary with the support of the teacher. The final lesson focuses on creating a group performance that encapsulates all the learned elements from the previous sessions.
