Dance 2 - Lesson 2
Physical Education Resource Description
In the second lesson of the Year 2 Dance module, students are encouraged to delve into the world of movement through the theme of toy robots. The learning objectives are clearly outlined, aiming for pupils to select and explore a variety of robotic movements, repeat and link actions with coordination, and provide feedback on their peers' work with teacher support. The success criteria ensure that the children can imaginatively respond to stimuli, explore and repeat movements, and articulate their observations using basic dance terminology. Key vocabulary such as 'phrase', 'screwing', and 'robotic' are introduced, setting the stage for a creative and structured exploration of dance.
The lesson plan is carefully structured, beginning with a warm-up where the teacher uses cones to set out a dance zone and leads the class through a series of travelling steps and alphabet shapes. The main part of the lesson involves discussion around toys and their movements, followed by a focus on robot movements which are stiff and jerky. Pupils then partner up to compose and perform their own dance phrases, embodying the robotic actions they have discussed. The lesson concludes with a cool-down session, revisiting the alphabet activity and incorporating stretching and breathing exercises to relax the students. Throughout the lesson, there are opportunities for leadership, allowing pupils to demonstrate movements and lead activities, fostering a sense of responsibility and confidence.
