Gymnastics 2 - Lesson 3
Physical Education Resource Description
In Year 1 Gymnastics Lesson 3, the objective is for pupils to learn, replicate, and name fundamental low-level gymnastic shapes. The success of the lesson is measured by the children's ability to recognise and name these shapes, understand how to balance and form shapes on the floor, and mirror these shapes accurately. Key terms for the session include 'pike', 'tuck', 'straddle', 'arch', 'dish', 'routine', 'entrance', and 'exit'. The equipment required for the lesson includes cones to mark safe zones, safety mats for the activities, and bibs for a tag game used during the warm-up. The warm-up, lasting 10 minutes, is an imaginative 'Treasure Island' game where pupils practice being 'safe' on mats while performing low-level shapes to avoid being tagged.
The main part of the lesson, which spans 30 minutes, has pupils working in pairs to practice and reinforce previously learnt shapes, such as the 'pike', 'tuck', and 'straddle', with the addition of new shapes like the 'dish' and 'arch'. The class teacher demonstrates each shape, using a 'my turn, your turn' approach, to help pupils understand and copy the form. Pupils are also taught the importance of entrance and exit positions in a routine, which includes performing two low-level shapes consecutively. They are encouraged to observe and give feedback to their peers. The lesson concludes with a 10-minute 'Bean Game' cool down, where pupils respond to various bean-themed commands, and a reflection session where they lay on their backs and consider what they've learnt, using the key vocabulary to describe their own and their partners' performances.
