Gymnastics 2 - Unit Overview
Physical Education Resource Description
The Year 1 Gymnastics 2 unit is a comprehensive plan designed to introduce pupils to the fundamental aspects of gymnastics, including basic and advanced shapes, mirroring, copying, various travelling styles, and jumping techniques. Throughout the unit, students will have the opportunity to create and perform small routines that showcase their newly acquired skills. The lessons build upon prior knowledge such as entrances, exits, and basic routines, allowing for a seamless progression in learning. Teachers are provided with tips to manage lesson timings effectively, ensure safety with appropriate use of gymnastics mats, maintain discipline with clear stop signals, and encourage creative thinking through performances that include well-defined beginnings, middles, and ends.
The Medium Term Plan outlines specific learning objectives and success criteria for each lesson in the unit. The first lesson focuses on developing the ability to take weight on hands and feet, with pupils learning to travel using different speeds and styles. In subsequent lessons, students will learn to name, copy, and mirror basic and advanced low-level shapes, understanding their characteristics and how to balance. They will explore various styles of travelling, including moving under, over, and through apparatus, and work collaboratively in small teams. The unit progresses to jumping and landing techniques, ensuring safety and control, and culminates with pupils creating and performing their own small routines that incorporate springs, bounces, and jumps, demonstrating their understanding and creativity.
