Games 2 - Lesson 5
Physical Education Resource Description
In Year 1's Games 2 - Lesson 5, the learning objective is to grasp the concept of dribbling and the skills it entails. To achieve success, pupils must be able to dribble a football, stop a moving ball effectively, and use both feet for dribbling. Key terms like dribbling, stopping, controlling, and passing are introduced. The equipment required includes cones, tennis balls, and footballs. The warm-up activity, 'Stuck In The Mud', involves pupils being tagged with a ball and then freed by their peers. This activity encourages movement and spatial awareness, with variations and extensions to increase the challenge. Pupil discussions focus on their experiences during the game, such as how many classmates they freed and strategies to avoid being tagged.
The main part of the lesson is divided into three activities. 'Watermelon Splat' requires pupils to dribble around cones, stopping their ball on command. Key teaching points include keeping the ball close to their feet and using the inside of the foot for control. In 'Clock Face', pupils work in pairs to dribble around cones set out in a diamond shape, simulating the face of a clock. They practice keeping the ball close and looking ahead in the direction they're moving. The third activity, 'Relay Dodge', involves groups of six in a zig-zag dribbling relay, fostering teamwork and directional understanding. The lesson concludes with a 'Freeze Challenge' cool down, where pupils mirror each other's movements. Pupil talk at the end of the lesson reflects on the main skill of dribbling and what they've learned about it.
