Games 2 - Unit Overview
Physical Education Resource Description
The 'Games 2' unit for Year 1 pupils, part of the Striver Lesson Plans, is designed to build upon the foundational skills in basic games. Throughout this unit, children will delve into essential sports skills such as carrying and balancing equipment, honing their throwing and catching abilities, and developing precision in striking and kicking moving balls. The lessons also cover the introductory skills necessary for dribbling and promote active participation in team games. This unit is an extension of prior learning where pupils have already been introduced to fundamental movement skills and basic ball skills such as striking, throwing, catching, kicking, and the principles of sending and receiving.
Teachers are provided with practical tips to ensure effective delivery of the lessons, including advice on timing, particularly as lessons are structured to last one hour, inclusive of changing times and potential equipment setup. To cater to varying abilities within the class, the lesson plans suggest challenging pairs that excel with specific targets. The activities are designed to start simply and can be scaled up in complexity as the pupils progress. The medium-term plan outlines six lessons, each with clear learning objectives and success criteria, ranging from carrying and balancing equipment to engaging in team games and demonstrating the cumulative skills learned throughout the unit. These lessons are structured to encourage rhythm, teamwork, and an understanding of sportsmanship through the concepts of winning and losing.
