Games 2 - Lesson 4
Physical Education Resource Description
In the fourth lesson of the Games 2 series for Year 1, students are tasked with developing their ability to strike and kick a moving ball with precision and control. The success criteria for this lesson are clearly laid out: pupils should be able to kick a stationary ball, kick a rebounded ball, and enhance their racket-hitting skills. The key vocabulary for the session includes terms such as 'kicking', 'hitting', 'rebound', and 'passing'. To facilitate the activities, a variety of equipment is required including cones, footballs, basketballs, tennis balls, benches, cricket stumps, and batting tees.
The lesson is structured into three segments, beginning with a warm-up called 'Passing By Numbers', where the class is divided into groups to pass a ball in numerical order while moving, fostering communication and accurate throwing. The main part of the lesson consists of 'Striking & Kicking Stations', which involves five different activities that focus on kicking against a bench, scoring goals, passing a football, hitting a tennis ball off a tee, and a bounce-hit-catch drill. These exercises are designed to teach students the correct techniques for kicking and striking, such as using the inside of the foot and maintaining a firm grip and side-on posture when using a racket. The lesson concludes with a cool-down activity named 'Score a Goal!', where pupils dribble and attempt to score in a mini-goal, reinforcing the key skills learned during the session.
