Line Graph Mistakes

The Line Graph Pack 2, created by KS2Gems in 2021, is an educational resource designed to help children identify and understand common mistakes found in line graphs. The pack includes a variety of line graphs that intentionally contain errors for educational purposes. Teachers are advised to distribute these graphs among students, preferably working in pairs, to scrutinise and determine which features are correctly presented and which are not. The exercise encourages children to articulate the errors they spot and consider whether these mistakes can be rectified.

Before students begin their analysis, it may be beneficial for the teacher to model the activity with the entire class to establish a clear understanding of what to look for. The graphs cover a range of topics, such as temperature in the classroom, rainfall, snowfall, favourite pizzas, ice cream sales, the progression of a race, and even a graph charting favourite colours. Each graph has been plotted with deliberate inaccuracies, challenging students to use their critical thinking skills to identify what has gone wrong. This hands-on approach not only enhances their ability to interpret line graphs but also improves their attention to detail and problem-solving abilities in the context of data representation.
