Interpreting Line Graphs
Maths Resource Description
The Line Graph Pack 1 is an educational resource designed to help children in Key Stage 2 develop their skills in interpreting line graphs. The pack includes a collection of line graphs that are intentionally left without titles or labels on the axes, providing a blank canvas for students to engage with the data presented. Teachers are advised to distribute these graphs among the children, preferably having them work in pairs, to encourage collaboration and discussion as they delve into the task of creating a narrative that explains the trends and changes depicted in the graph.
Students are prompted to use their creativity and analytical skills to invent a 'story' that the graph could represent, which involves crafting a suitable title and deciding on what the axes should represent. This exercise not only aids in understanding how line graphs work but also allows for multiple interpretations, demonstrating that data can tell a variety of stories depending on the context. Teachers are encouraged to demonstrate the activity with the whole class first, to ensure that students grasp the concept. The versatility of the activity means that it can generate a wide array of 'stories' from a single graph, highlighting the importance of context and labelling in data interpretation.
