Place Value Target Boards 1
Maths Resource Description
KS2Gems' "Place Value Target Boards" are an engaging educational tool designed for Year 4 students to strengthen their understanding of place value in three-digit numbers. The objective of these activities is multifaceted: students are expected to recognise the value of each digit in a number, specifically identifying the thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones places. They also learn to compare and order numbers beyond 1000, find 1000 more or less than a given number, and round any number to the nearest 10, 100, or 1000. These target boards serve as an excellent resource for beginning or concluding lessons and are suitable for whole-class or small group instruction.
The target boards present a series of numbers on which students perform various mathematical operations. For instance, the teacher may ask students to identify how many numbers have a thousands digit greater than 8, or to arrange a row of numbers in ascending order. Other tasks include adding 1000 to a specified number or rounding all numbers in a row to the nearest 10. These boards are versatile, allowing teachers to simultaneously challenge different groups of students by providing tailored instructions for each group. With whiteboards and pens, students can actively participate in these quick, skill-building sessions, making the target boards a perfect fit for retrieval practice and reinforcing place value concepts.
