Place Value Counters
Maths Resource Description
Place Value Counters are a visual and tactile educational tool designed to aid KS2 students in understanding the concept of place value in numbers. The counters represent different numerical values, from ones to millions, as well as decimal places to thousandths. Each row of counters corresponds to a specific place value, starting with single units, which are depicted as '1'. Multiple rows of these single unit counters are arranged to reinforce the value they represent.
Moving up in value, the next set of counters represents tens, shown as '10', and similarly, they are displayed in rows to help children grasp the magnitude of tens in comparison to single units. The pattern continues with hundreds ('100'), thousands ('1000'), ten thousands ('10000'), and hundred thousands ('100000'), each represented by their respective numerical values on the counters. For higher values, such as millions ('1000000'), the counters are spaced out to emphasise the significant increase in value. Decimal place values are also included, with tenths ('0.1'), hundredths ('0.01'), and thousandths ('0.001') counters, illustrating the concept of parts of a whole in a clear and structured manner. These counters serve as an effective learning resource to enhance students' comprehension of place value in a variety of numerical contexts.
