Fractions - Find three quarters - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In the third week of the spring term, Year 2 students delve into the world of fractions, specifically focusing on finding three quarters, or 3/4, of various quantities. The lesson begins with a starter activity that encourages children to recall how to find one half, one third, and one quarter of a whole, using bar models as visual aids. This foundational knowledge is then extended to help them understand how to identify and represent three quarters. The teaching input emphasises the importance of dividing a whole into equal parts and sharing the quantity to find 3/4, ensuring that the children count three out of the four equal parts.
Independent learning is facilitated through differentiated worksheets, which cater to varying levels of understanding—from working towards the expected level to greater depth. These worksheets challenge the children to find 3/4 of both simple and larger amounts, with the use of cubes to visually and tangibly aid their comprehension of quarters. The lesson concludes with a plenary session where students reflect on what they've learned, discussing the skills they've used and found challenging, as well as the resources that supported their learning. The 'Give me five' activity allows children to articulate their learning outcomes and make a 'pinkie promise' to remember key aspects of the lesson, ensuring a solid grasp of finding three quarters in different contexts.
