Local archaeologists - Teacher notes

The objective of this educational segment is to deepen pupils' understanding of the role and work of archaeologists. Teachers are encouraged to present their class with three online resources, prefacing each with a brief paragraph to stimulate interest. Following this introduction, students are tasked with formulating up to fifteen statements that encapsulate the duties and activities of an archaeologist. This exercise is designed to engage students and provide them with a clearer picture of the profession.

To further immerse the pupils in the world of archaeology, the lesson plan includes a hands-on activity where they adopt the role of archaeologists themselves. They are to examine photographs and use them to deduce whether certain buildings are over a century old or have been constructed within the last decade. Equipped with cameras, groups of six will explore their local area in search of both ancient and recent artefacts. This practical experience aims to foster investigative skills and a deeper appreciation for historical research. Additionally, the lesson prompts students to consider the significance of the Ancient Egyptian civilisation and the contributions of archaeologists to our understanding of history, not only in Egypt but globally.
