Link it! Prior knowledge - British Empire - Year 6
History Resource Description
As part of the curriculum for Year 6, students are encouraged to delve into the history of the British Empire, linking it to their prior knowledge. They will explore a variety of countries that were once part of the empire, acknowledging the vast geographical spread and cultural diversity that it encompassed. The children are also prompted to recognise from their previous studies that Britain's status as a significant global power was not a constant throughout history. This reflection helps them understand the dynamic nature of political and historical power shifts.
In preparation for the unit, students are asked to record what they already know about the British Empire in the 'Prior Knowledge' section of their Knowledge Organiser. This activity is designed to help them connect the new information they will learn with what they already know, thereby deepening their understanding. The 'LINK IT!' section of the lesson encourages students to draw connections within the subject of history, across other subjects such as geography or economics, and from their own personal experiences or family histories. This holistic approach ensures that learning is not only about acquiring facts but also about understanding the broader context and relevance of historical events.
