History Resource Description
Throughout its history, the British Empire encompassed a vast array of territories across the globe. Here are seven countries that were once part of this empire:
- India – Often referred to as the "Jewel in the Crown" of the British Empire, India was a major source of revenue and resources.
- Australia – Initially used as a penal colony, Australia became a significant part of the empire, with British settlers arriving in the late 18th century.
- Canada – With the British victory in the Seven Years' War, France ceded control of Canada to Britain, and it became an important North American colony.
- Egypt – Though not a formal colony, Egypt was effectively under British control after 1882 due to its strategic location and the Suez Canal.
- South Africa – The British Empire controlled various parts of South Africa at different times, with significant influence over the region's politics and economics.
- New Zealand – British sovereignty over New Zealand was established through the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, leading to increased settlement.
- Jamaica – Acquired from Spain in 1655, Jamaica became a hub for sugar production and trade within the British Empire.
The British Empire was created over several centuries, with motives ranging from trade and economics to political power and strategic advantage. The desire for new markets, raw materials, and the spread of cultural and religious beliefs were also driving factors behind its expansion.
