Progression pedagogy - Rainforests - Year 5
Geography Resource Description
The educational framework for Year 5 pupils exploring rainforests is structured to enhance knowledge retention and understanding of why rainforests are located in specific regions of the world. The pedagogical approach adopted for this unit is the 'link it, learn it, check it, show it, and know it' system, which is a progression model designed to incrementally build upon students' knowledge. This model is part of the 'Five stages of learning and remembering' strategy, which aims to maximise opportunities for pupils to absorb and recall information effectively.
At the outset, 'Before the learning', pupils are encouraged to make connections with their existing knowledge or prior experiences related to rainforests. 'During the learning', they engage with new information and concepts that explain the formation of rainforests and the reasons for their specific geographic locations. 'At the end of the learning', they have the opportunity to check their understanding through various assessments or recap activities. Following this, 'Show it' allows pupils to demonstrate their comprehension and retention of the subject matter. Finally, 'After the learning' ensures that the knowledge is well-embedded and can be recalled in future contexts. This structured approach facilitates a deeper learning experience and helps students to 'know it', ensuring the information sticks with them beyond the classroom.
