Check it! - My local area - Year 1
Geography Resource Description
In a Year 1 curriculum module focused on the United Kingdom and local area knowledge, students are encouraged to engage with what they've learned through a variety of review techniques. The "Check It!" segment is a critical part of this learning process, prompting young learners to reflect on their understanding of the UK and their immediate surroundings. To reinforce their knowledge, children are reminded not to forget the importance of regularly revisiting what they've been taught. A selection of suggested ideas for review includes a 'brain dump', where students freely write down everything they remember, and the 'Give me FIVE!' exercise, which could involve naming five cities in the UK or identifying five different road signs.
The learning materials also encourage students to 'Expand and Elaborate' on specific topics, such as the composition of the UK, which includes four countries, and the significance of postcodes in finding addresses. The 'Pyramid Check' further challenges students by asking them to recall increasingly complex information, starting from the full name of their school to naming famous buildings in their town or city. The pyramid is designed with the expectation that all pupils can answer the questions at the base, with the difficulty increasing as they move up the levels. These interactive and tiered activities are designed to solidify the children's geographical and civic knowledge in an engaging and age-appropriate manner.
