Know it - My local area - Year 1
Geography Resource Description
The educational resource "What do I know about the UK and where I live?" is designed for Year 1 students to enhance their knowledge of the United Kingdom's geography. This particular activity focuses on the countries within the UK, the surrounding seas, and the major cities and towns. Students are encouraged to independently match the four countries of Wales, England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland with their respective numbers, with two points awarded for each correct answer. They are also tasked with identifying the English Channel, North Sea, and Irish Sea, earning three points for each correct association.
Further activities include listing as many UK towns and cities as the children can recall within a ten-minute timeframe, where the emphasis is on recognition rather than spelling, with two points per correct entry. Another task named "Give me 3!" requires students to name three places from each of the four UK countries, with a point scored for each correct place named. Additionally, students are asked to think of three features or characteristics for each country, aiming for a minimum score of ten points. The activity culminates with a challenge to correctly identify the capital cities of Belfast, Edinburgh, London, and Cardiff, with three points awarded for each correct capital matched to its country.
