Spelling - Common Exceptions Word activity
English Resource Description
The "Look, Say, Cover, Write and Check" activity is an engaging home learning exercise designed to help students master common exception words—those that do not follow regular phonetic patterns and can be tricky to spell. This activity encourages students to carefully observe (Look) each word, pronounce it aloud (Say), hide the word from view (Cover), attempt to write it from memory (Write), and then compare their attempt with the correct spelling (Check). If they make a mistake, they are prompted to write the correct spelling in the 'Correction' column. This methodical approach reinforces the correct spelling through repetition and self-assessment.
After practicing the spelling of each word, students are challenged to compose sentences using two of the learned words. This additional task aids in contextual understanding and helps students to see how these words function in everyday language. By constructing their own sentences, learners not only apply their spelling knowledge but also enhance their writing skills. The list of words includes commonly used terms such as 'the', 'to', 'of', 'you', 'was', 'is', 'he', 'she', 'me', 'my', and 'like', which are essential for young readers and writers to recognize and spell accurately.
