Year 1 pupils embark on a literary adventure with "Do Not Enter the Monster Zoo", where they are introduced to a variety of fantastical creatures. The curriculum objectives for this module are multifaceted, aiming to enhance pupils' reading and writing skills through a series of engaging activities. In reading, they apply their phonics knowledge to decode words, quickly matching sounds to graphemes and blending sounds in unfamiliar words. They work on fluency by reading common exception words and words with various endings like s, es, ing, ed, er, and est. Pupils also practice reading words with contractions and develop their reading comprehension by discussing stories, poems, and non-fiction texts, all while linking new vocabulary to their existing knowledge.

As part of their writing journey, pupils are taught to spell words containing the 40+ phonemes, days of the week, and common exception words. They learn to add prefixes and suffixes, apply simple spelling rules, and write dictated sentences from memory. They focus on composing and sequencing sentences to form narratives, ensuring their writing is coherent and can be read aloud clearly. Additionally, pupils work on their handwriting, learning to form letters and digits correctly. Grammar and punctuation are also key components, with pupils beginning to use capital letters, full stops, question marks, and exclamation marks appropriately. The module encourages pupils to use grammatical terminology in discussing their writing, setting a solid foundation for their literacy development.
