Inspired by: Monster Zoo - Week 5

Inspired by the book "Do Not Enter the Monster Zoo", the lesson focuses on understanding and applying suffixes to root words without altering their spelling. The activity involves recalling a scene where monsters kick and flick objects around, and then identifying other verbs within the story that describe the monsters' antics. Students are tasked with adding 'ing' and 'ed' to these verbs, such as 'howl' becoming 'howling' and 'howled', and 'smash' turning into 'smashing' and 'smashed'. Through this exercise, students observe the patterns in word formation and discuss the similarities and differences in the application of these suffixes.

Another aspect of learning delves into the realm of emotional literacy and inference skills. Reflecting on the story's conclusion, where the little boy is eager to return to the zoo, students explore his feelings of pride and happiness. They compare this to his initial apprehension upon first entering the zoo, using illustrations and text to infer his emotions. This leads to a role-playing activity where students express what the little boy might say, helping them understand how words and actions can reveal feelings. Additionally, students practice reading aloud their own writing, ensuring clarity and audibility, as they create rules for the monsters to follow, mirroring the little boy's assertiveness when he lays down conditions for his return to the zoo.
