Inspired by: Monster Zoo - Week 4
English Resource Description
In the delightful world of "Monster Zoo", children are encouraged to engage in lively discussions about the story's content, taking turns and listening attentively to their peers. An interesting activity prompts them to consider renaming the book, originally titled "Monster Zoo", to something more fitting like "Messy Zoo". This is due to the monsters' penchant for untidiness and their proclivity for creating chaos. Children are asked to brainstorm alternative names for the zoo and provide two reasons supporting their suggestions. This exercise not only sparks creativity but also helps them practice using conjunctions, specifically 'and', to join words and clauses in their reasoning.
As part of the learning experience, children dive into character analysis, particularly focusing on the most mischievous monster in the zoo. They discuss their opinions with classmates and articulate why a particular monster stands out as the naughtiest, possibly even claiming the title of their favourite. To deepen their understanding, they are tasked with writing a description of their chosen monster, considering traits that make one monster more appealing than another. After sharing their descriptions with a friend, they engage in a reflective dialogue to see if their views align. Moreover, the children explore verb tenses through the actions of the monsters, identifying verbs from the story and converting them into their '-ing' and '-ed' forms, noting the spelling patterns. The activity culminates with an exploration of emotions, as they infer the little boy's feelings throughout the story by analysing the text and illustrations, and even stepping into his shoes through role-play.
