Progression pedagogy - State of Matter - Year 4
Science Resource Description
The 'Progression within this unit of learning' for Year 4 pupils focuses on the states of matter and how solids, liquids, and gases can transition between these states. The teaching methodology employed is a systematic approach called 'link it, learn it, check it, show it, and know it' which is designed to enhance the pupils' ability to absorb and retain the information presented. This method ensures that learning is structured to progressively build upon itself, helping students to form strong connections with the material and embed it into their long-term memory.
At the outset, 'before the learning', pupils are introduced to the concepts in a way that links new ideas to their existing knowledge. 'During the learning', the teaching focuses on exploring and understanding the processes through which solids, liquids, and gases change state. 'At the end of the learning', pupils have opportunities to 'check' their understanding and to 'show' what they have learned through various forms of assessment and demonstration of knowledge. Finally, 'after the learning', the aim is for pupils to have a firm grasp of the subject matter—'know it'—ensuring they can recall and apply their understanding of how different states of matter can transition from one to another. The 'Five stages of learning and remembering' document provides additional information on this pedagogical framework, supporting educators in delivering effective lessons on this topic.
