Which materials keep us dry? - Teacher notes
Science Resource Description
The lesson begins with an interactive discussion aimed at encouraging children to think about everyday objects that protect them from getting wet. The teacher prompts the children to consider not only the items themselves but specifically the materials from which these items are made. This sets the stage for the children to distinguish between materials based on their water-resistant properties.
After establishing an understanding of practical water-resistant materials, the children are then guided to reflect on materials that would not serve the purpose of keeping them dry, noting the characteristics of these materials as well. With this foundational knowledge, the children are tasked with conducting a hands-on investigation. They are provided with resources and instructed to work collaboratively in small groups, with up to four members in each. The culmination of the activity involves the children documenting their findings and illustrating their experimental process through diagrams, thereby reinforcing their learning about materials and their ability to repel water.
